An ice dam is a layer of ice that builds up along the edge of a roof, forming a barrier stopping water from running into the gutter. This is formed by snow across the roof slowly melting and running down towards the edge where it freezes before draining away. A backup of water and snow stagnates on the roof which in turn can cause the water to leak into the property. In the worst cases it may form large sheets of ice which can fall at any moment or harm the structural integrity and collapse a portion of your roof.

The water sitting against the dam can leak through the roof into the home, causing damage to the ceilings, walls, cavity insulations, and other surfaces. The cost of repairing this can easily skyrocket when compared with the relatively small cost of ice damming removal.
